Police have charged two teenagers after a violent series of alleged assaults at an Earlville bus stop early Tuesday morning. Officers say the incident began just before 6.20am, when an 18‑year‑old Mooroobool man and a 17‑year‑old Keriri Island boy allegedly attacked a 58‑year‑old man waiting at a Mulgrave Road shopping centre.
Moments later, the pair allegedly turned on a 24‑year‑old Edmonton man, stabbing him in the chest and stealing his property. A 69‑year‑old man who tried to step in was also allegedly assaulted, suffering a significant head injury. A 52‑year‑old woman was also allegedly threatened with a knife while trying to help the 24‑year‑old victim.
Police provided first aid at the scene before all three injured men were taken to Cairns Hospital.
The two teens were taken into custody on Mestrez Street around 8.45am. The 17‑year‑old has been charged with offences including assault occasioning bodily harm whilst armed, armed robbery, stealing, acts intended to cause bodily harm, serious assault of a person over 60 and common assault. The 18‑year‑old faces similar charges, including serious assault whilst armed and armed robbery. Both have been refused bail and are due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates and Cairns Childrens Courts yesterday.
Police are urging anyone with dashcam or CCTV vision from the Mulgrave Road or Mestrez Street areas between 6am and 8.45am to come forward as investigations continue.
