Spanish soccer striker Jesús de Miguel dies at age 30 after a sickening collision with a goalkeeper.
A Spanish second-division soccer match was abandoned in stoppage time after a horrific collision left Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel fighting for his life. He later died in hospital.
The incident happened late in the match between CD Tenerife and FC Andorra at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López stadium. With the scores level at 2-2 in the 97th minute, a long ball was played upfield. De Miguel, 30, ran forward on the counter-attack near the halfway line. Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono charged out to clear the ball and collided with him. Owono’s knee struck De Miguel in the chest and head area. The striker collapsed and was left motionless on the pitch. Players from both teams urgently called for medical help, with several visibly distressed and in tears. The referee abandoned the match.
De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest and was resuscitated by paramedics in the ambulance. Paramedics took him to the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of Nuestra Señora de Candelaria in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. The club initially said he was stable despite the severity of his condition, but his neurological state worsened overnight. Tenerife confirmed he passed away at 8 am local time on Tuesday, 3 November 2026.
In a statement, the club said:
“Broken with pain, with a lump in the throat and unable to believe this is true, from the Tenerife CD we communicate the tragic death, this Tuesday, November 3, 2026, at 8:00 hours, of Jesús de Miguel Alameda.
There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can ease this feeling full of sadness. We are with his desolate family, with his loved ones, with all the Tenerife people who are crying today for this cruel outcome.
The family of Jesús de Miguel thanks each and every one of the expressions of support received, and also requests, from the heart, maximum respect for his privacy, in these terrible moments.
DEP”
Owono, the 25-year-old Equatorial Guinea international, was shown a red card for the challenge. Andorra expressed deep condolences, and reports described the goalkeeper as devastated in the dressing room. Spanish authorities opened a routine investigation, as is standard for non-natural deaths. Prosecutors have indicated it is unlikely to result in criminal charges, as the collision occurred in the course of play.
De Miguel, born in Madrid in 1996 and known as Demi, had a long career in the Spanish lower leagues before joining Tenerife in July 2025. He scored 11 goals in the campaign that helped the club win promotion back to the Segunda División and had become an important figure for the side. He leaves behind his family, including a young daughter.
The Spanish football community has been united in grief, with tributes from across the game and some domestic cup fixtures postponed as a mark of respect. The match had already been delayed by a day due to weather concerns on the island.
“A solemn tribute will be held in memory of Jesús de Miguel, CD Tenerife footballer, at the Heliodoro Rodríguez López Stadium. All Blue and White fans who wish to do so will be able to attend the event, where they will be able to say goodbye to the Tenerife striker in the best way.
The CD Tenerife first team will be present, along with the coaching staff and the Blue and White board, at the funeral of Jesús de Miguel’s body, which will take place in Navahermosa (Toledo).
Suspended, due to this tragic event, the activity of CD Tenerife, its women’s team and grassroots football, the entity declares six days of official mourning.
The family of Jesús de Miguel is grateful for each and every one of the expressions of support received, and also requests, from the bottom of its heart, maximum respect for his privacy, in these terrible moments.”
This remains a developing situation focused on supporting those affected. The priority is the family and everyone impacted by the loss of a player who had only recently found a home and success at Tenerife.
