Former ‘Cosby Show’ Star Malcolm-Jamal Warner Passes Away at 54

Malcolm-Jamal Warner, best known for his role as Theo Huxtable on the iconic sitcom The Cosby Show, has tragically passed away at the age of 54. Warner drowned off the coast of Costa Rica on Sunday, according to Costa Rican National Police. His official cause of death was asphyxia caused by drowning.

Warner died near Cocles Beach in Limón, Costa Rica, after being caught in a rip current Sunday afternoon. Bystanders pulled him from the water and brought him to shore, where he was treated but ultimately pronounced dead by the Costa Rican Red Cross, police confirmed. Authorities described Warner as a tourist who had been visiting the area.

Malcolm-Jamal Warner’s career spanned decades, starting with his breakout role as Theodore “Theo” Huxtable on The Cosby Show, which aired from 1984 to 1992. His performance earned him an Emmy nomination and made him a beloved figure in television history.

Warner went on to star in other hit TV shows, including Malcolm & Eddie (1996-2000), where he appeared alongside comedian Eddie Griffin, and Reed Between the Lines, where he played Dr. Alex Reed. Most recently, Warner starred in the Fox medical drama The Resident, appearing in five of its six seasons.

Born on August 18, 1970, Malcolm-Jamal Warner showed an early passion for acting. He attended and graduated from The Professional Children’s School in New York City and made his television debut in 1982 on Matt Houston. The following year, he appeared on the TV series Fame.

Warner’s life changed in 1984 when he landed the role of Theo Huxtable on The Cosby Show, starring alongside Bill Cosby, Phylicia Rashad, and Lisa Bonet. The sitcom went on to become one of the most celebrated series in television history.
