A 58-year-old woman has been charged following the death of an 80-year-old man who was allegedly stabbed at Palm Cove.
Paramedics and police were called to an apartment block on Williams Esplanade following reports of a serious assault at around 10.50pm last night.
The man was transported to Cairns Base Hospital in a critical condition with wounds to his chest, abdomen and back.
He passed away in hospital as a result of his injuries.
Police say they located a 58-year-old Kamerunga woman on Williams Esplanade and she was taken back to the Cairns Police Watchouse.
She will face the Cairns Magistrates Court tomorrow.
Detective Acting Inspector Jason Chetham says the relationship between the pair is still unclear, however it’s believed they were known to each other.
“Obviously there was an altercation, he suffered stab wounds but exactly what happened in that apartment, last night, is what we are trying to work out,” he says.
Police have seized a knife from the residence, believed to be the alleged murder weapon.
Investigations are continuing into the circumstances leading up to the incident.
