An off-duty cop has allegedly been assaulted trying to break up a fight in Cairns.
Police say a fight broke out between a 40-year-old man and others on the Esplanade around 4.20pm on Wednesday.
An off-duty officer identified himself to the man and tried to intervene.

The man is accused of throwing food items, hitting the police officer in the head before officers arrived to assist.
Other police arrived and took the man into custody.
The 40-year-old has been charged with one count each of assault police, public nuisance and contravene a banning notice.
He is due to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on October 2.
