The KAP has welcomed a move by the state government to introduce bush sentencing in Queensland
The Crisafulli Government plans to create an alternative to youth detention with interest welcomed to deliver the program.
There is set to be a location in North Queensland – a focus on structure, discipline and education – and will begin in 2026.
It’s a move the KAP and Nick Dametto had been calling for since 2017.
Organisations keen on working with the state government to deliver the program can go to the youth justice program by October 6.
“During the 2024 election campaign, the LNP picked up this policy and now seeks to introduce it as Circuit Breaker Sentencing,” KAP MP Nick Dametto said.
“I am so proud that a policy that we spent years developing with correctional staff, youth workers and First Nations leaders is finally coming to fruition,” Mr Dametto said.
“This alternative sentencing method is designed to put distance between victims and offenders while utilising methods that have been proven to turn young lives around.
“Hard work and a bit of dirt under the fingernails never hurt anybody. If implemented correctly, this incarceration method will teach the value of hard work and responsibility in a bid to turn young offenders away from a life of crime,” he said.
