Five teens face court as stolen car numbers surge in Cairns

Police in Far North Queensland have reported 54 vehicles already stolen this month. Five teenage boys are now facing court over a string of separate, alleged offences across Cairns.

A 16‑year‑old boy was charged on December 12 after being linked to multiple break‑ins and vehicle thefts across several suburbs. Police allege he used stolen cars to access businesses and carry out fuel drive‑offs between January and November. He faces 11 counts of unlawful use of a motor vehicle among 37 charges, and is due to appear in the Cairns Childrens Court on 15 January.

In Manoora, a 15‑year‑old boy was tracked by police dog PD Elvis in the early hours of December 13. He allegedly attempted to break into a Springfield Crescent home before being disturbed by the resident. He has been charged with attempted break‑in and face masked with intent, and will reappear in court on 5 February.

A 12‑year‑old boy was arrested after allegedly assaulting a staff member during a robbery at a Reservoir Road business on December 13. Police say he threatened the worker with a metal rod before stealing stock. He faces charges of assault and stealing, and appeared in the Cairns Childrens Court yesterday.

Two boys, aged 13 and 14, were charged following an incident at a Reservoir Road business on December 12. Police allege they forced entry and stole stock, and were also involved in earlier break‑ins at an Esplanade unit and a Cairns liquor store. Both are due to appear in court tomorrow.
