Most people hope for cake, presents or a quiet celebration on their birthday. For one woman in New York, the day became memorable for a completely different reason when she suddenly vanished into a hidden hole beneath her backyard.
Danielle Tammone, from Long Island, was outside her Bohemia home on her 47th birthday when the ground beneath her unexpectedly gave way. She later described feeling the earth begin to shift before she sank into what appeared to be a concealed underground structure, possibly an old well or cesspool hidden below the lawn.
The opening was reportedly only about a foot wide, yet it led to an eight-foot-deep cavity. Tammone landed in muddy, waterlogged ground at the bottom, which likely prevented serious injuries. Despite avoiding major harm, she found herself trapped with little room to move and feared the walls could collapse further around her.
Unable to climb out, she repeatedly called for help. Her cries were eventually heard by neighbours, who initially struggled to work out where the sound was coming from. After spotting a small opening in the lawn and noticing Tammone’s shoes nearby, they realised she was trapped beneath the ground and immediately contacted emergency services.
Police arrived and carried out a straightforward but nerve-racking rescue. Using a ladder borrowed from a neighbour, rescuers lowered it into the hole and helped Tammone climb back to the surface. She is believed to have spent roughly half an hour underground before being pulled to safety.
Remarkably, the ordeal left her with little more than minor scrapes. Looking back, Tammone credited the soft, muddy conditions at the bottom of the hole for cushioning her fall. While the birthday celebration may not have gone as planned, she was able to walk away from an incident that could have ended far differently.
