The Far North is getting a major boost in the fight against property crime, with a second dedicated Property Crime Unit now officially operating on the Tablelands. The new team will focus on cracking down on repeat offenders, stolen vehicles and serious property crime, expanding the model that’s already been delivering strong results in Cairns.
The Cairns Property Crime Unit has been one of the region’s most effective policing tools, recording more than a thousand arrests and almost five thousand charges last year alone. Since the start of 2025, more than 1,200 people have been charged with over 5,300 property‑crime‑related offences across the Far North, and police say the demand for targeted resources has only grown.
The new team brings together detectives, plain‑clothes officers, the Tactical Crime Squad, the Dog Squad, general duties police and POLAIR, all working in tandem to disrupt offending and get offenders before the courts.
