The peak period of stinger season has come to an end, with the nets pulled up from beaches around Cairns. However, whether they go back in or not will depend on what happens over the coming fortnight with surf living savers conducting stinger drags.
Since November, when the stinger season begins, at least 135 stings have been reported in the North.
“At the start of the season we were a little bit worried. We were getting some rather large and earlier on in the season box jellyfish,” Surf Life Saving regional manager, Jason Wells told Seven.
“We caught a lot of Irukandji in the nets that the lifesavers and lifeguards do but there were also quite a few stings…”
The water temperature in Cairns today is twenty-six degrees, with swimmers still advised to wear stinger suits.
