An album released 37 years ago by Queen has been named among Australia's top 2018 records while a local band upstaged global stars Ed Sheeran and Drake for most popular song.

Spurred on by the release of biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, Queen's Greatest Hits was announced on Thursday in eighth spot on the ARIA's top albums of the past year.

Yet, it wasn't Queen's best selling album in 2018 with the film's soundtrack slotting into fifth.

The album chart was topped by another soundtrack - The Greatest Showman, starring Hugh Jackman - which spent all but three weeks inside the top 10 and became the first soundtrack to top the end-of-year charts since Moulin Rouge in 2001.

Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born also made it into the top-five.

The top album in 2017, / by Ed Sheeran, finished No.2.

In the end-of-year singles charts, Sydney pop rock quartet 5 Seconds of Summer led the way with anthem Youngblood.

It marked the first time a local artist topped the ranks since Anthony Callea's The Prayer in 2005 and a rare upstaging of Drake and Sheeran.

Drake's God was the year's second most popular song while Perfect by Sheeran - which was the fourth biggest hit of 2017 - landed in No.3.

"We've always said to be recognised in our home country is more special than anything," 5SOS said in a statement on Thursday. "To have the number one song of 2018 is a very proud moment for this band.

"Thank you to everyone who has supported us and thank you Australia!"

Queensland singer-songwriter Amy Shark also enjoyed a standout year with her debut Love Monster the highest ranking local album of the year (No.14 overall).
