Charges Laid Over Serious Assault Of Cabbie
A man and woman have been charged over the serious assault of a taxi driver in Mount Sheridan.
The 22-year-old Earlville man and 21-year-old Bungalow woman were charged over the attack which happened at around 2.20AM last Friday.
The driver collected the woman from a Mulgrave Road hotel before transporting her to an address in Mount Sheridan.
When they arrived, the driver allegedly accompanied the woman into the property after she claimed she needed to get money for the fare.
As the driver walked to the rear of the property a light was allegedly shone in his face before he was struck several times by a man he didn't know.
The pair fled the area after allegedly stealing the victim’s wallet, mobile phones, cash and a backpack from the taxi. The driver managed to crawl back to the taxi before raising the alarm for assistance.
Police, the dog squad and other taxis immediately attended the area where a crime scene was established. The victim driver was conveyed to hospital for treatment for multiple abrasions and concussion.
The man was charged with robbery in company and evading a taxi fare.
The woman was charged with robbery in company.
Both are scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Monday.
