Weipa Hospital On Alert Due To Approaching Bushfire

UPDATE 13/9/19 | Queensland Fire and Emergency Services (QFES) crews remain at the scene of a bushfire burning in the vicinity of John Evans Drive and Kerr Point Drive, Nanum.

The fire is contained and there is no threat to property at this time.

Private landholder crews are on scene and may be backburning. Smoke may affect the area and traffic restrictions may also be in place.

Motorists should drive with caution and to conditions. If residents are affected by smoke they should close windows and doors.

Those suffering from a respiratory condition should keep their medication close by. If residents are concerned their property is under threat they are advised to call Triple Zero (000) immediately.

EARLIER 12/9/19 | Weipa Hospital is on alert with a bushfire shifting closer.  

Crews are battling the fire which flared up at John Evans Drive in Weipa on Thursday.  

Media reports suggested the hospital was in 'lockdown' but a Queensland Health spokesman confirmed that was not the case.

There is a bushfire alight at the rear of the hospital.

The spokesperson confirmed there are no plans to evacuate patients at this stage.
