Man Accused Of Slapping & Hurling A Glass At A Man In CBD
A man has been charged after he was accused of slapping a man he knows in the back of the head in the CBD in May.
A 19-year-old Bungalow local is accused of walking up to a 22-year-old man at a licensed premises on Shields Street and slapping him in the back of the head.
The victim had been seated in a booth with friends in the early hours of May 26 when the assault occurred.
He turned around and saw a younger man who was known to him. The younger man challenged him to a fight however the man ignored him and turned back to his friends.
It will be further alleged that moments later the younger man threw a glass cup, striking the victim on the side of the face and shattering on impact.
The victim sustained a facial injury due to the incident and the younger man was escorted from the premises by venue security staff.
The victim was treated at the scene by ambulance officers before being transported to Cairns Hospital for further treatment.
The incident was later reported to police.
Cairns CIB officers spoke with the 19-year-old on Saturday.
He was charged with one count each of common assault and assault occasioning bodily harm and is expected to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on July 30.
