Recently retired from the NBL, Cairns Basketball Inc. are proud to announce that power forward Alex Loughton won’t be hanging up basketball boots entirely and has committed to the Skytrans Cairns Marlins for the upcoming 2019 QBL season.

Loughton brings a wealth of experience after playing for the Taipans for nine seasons, finishing his tenure second in all-times games played (244) for the club.

The 35-year old memorably ended his 11-year NBL career in February with a season-high 17-point performance against the Sydney Kings.

Marlins Head Coach Jamie O’Loughlin said that Loughton was a potential player identified early to add invaluable leadership and experience to his youthful 2019 line-up.

“Mike Scott [CBI General Manager] and I worked together to construct a roster and Loughzy’s name came up early in our discussions.

“At first, we weren’t sure whether he was going to be interested, just coming off of his retirement so we thought we’d let time lapse, let him enjoy the end of his time in the NBL and then see how he felt about playing,” he said.

Loughton played his first QBL season with the Marlins in 2016 and suited up again in 2017 as an injury replacement for Stephen Weigh. O’Loughlin admitted it didn’t take much convincing for the Cairns stalwart to go around again.

“It wasn’t a difficult negotiation at all – Alex is trying to balance family life, work commitments and a new career, and he had to decide whether he could do all of that as well as play.

“But, he’s a basketball junkie, he loves playing, he loves being amongst the boys, so I’m sure he was keen to find a way.

“I think the biggest factor for him was deciding whether he could juggle it all and do it justice. Cairns is his home and he won a Championship with the Marlins in 2016 and I think he’s looking forward to, hopefully, doing that again.”

Loughton joins Cairns Marlins MVP Anthony Fisher, new import centre Tommy Hamilton and Taipans development players Christian Jurlina and Fabijan Krslovic on the roster.

The 2019 QBL season begins on 26 April, with the Marlins and Dolphins hosting their first home game at Cairns Basketball on Friday 3 May against South West Metro from 6:30pm.
