Major Grog Seizure Kowanyama
Police from the Cape York community of Kowanyama are working hard targeting the flow of illicit booze into the community leading up to the Christmas period.
Their efforts paid off recently with the seizure of a large quantity of liquor, cash and a vehicle.
Officers received information relating to a large quantity of liquor making its way into the Kowanyama community.
Officers conducted further investigations resulting in the execution of a search warrant at a local Kowanyama residential unit on November 29.
A search of the residence allegedly located 40 casks of wine, a quantity of beer and spirits and cash proceeds from the unlawful sales of liquor.
Officers subsequently seized the alcohol, cash and the woman’s vehicle which was used to transport the liquor from Cairns to Kowanyama.
A 49-year-old Cairns woman was charged with possession of liquor in restricted areas and is scheduled to appear in the Kowanyama Magistrates Court on December 13.
Officer in charge of the Kowanyama Police Station, Senior Sergeant Warren Flegg encourages members of the community to contact the ‘sly grog’ hotline.
“Sly grog cask wine sells from anywhere from $150 to $250, this is a total exploitation of local residents,” Senior Sergeant Flegg said.
“Police rely heavily on community reporting of illicit alcohol importation into restricted areas like Kowanyama.
“Members of the public and tourists are encouraged to make themselves aware of the restrictions when travelling through restricted areas and can remain anonymous when reporting illicit activity by calling the sly grog hotline on 1800 500 815.”
