Warren Entsch Not Hanging Up His Hat Just Yet

“There has been a lot of talk and speculation over recent months about whether I will contest the next federal election.

“It has been something that I have thought long and hard about and discussed at length with my family.

“Serving the people of Leichhardt and Far North Queensland for more than two decades has been the greatest privilege of my life.

“They say in politics the measure of your success is whether you leave your electorate in better shape than when you were elected.

“I would like to think that I have.

“It would have been easy for me to walk away after more than two decades in public life and handover the baton to someone else.

“But I still have unfinished business to achieve.

“That is why I have put my hand up for pre-selection for the seat of Leichhardt at the upcoming Federal Election, due to be held by June 2019.

“Pre-selection for the seat closes on Monday, 16 April.

“I am unaware if I will face a challenge at this stage but that is the beauty of our party.

“We are a grassroots party where the locals members, not union bosses or faceless men or women in metropolitan cities, choose who they want to represent them.

“I know there will be people out there, especially the keyboard warriors, who will question my decision purely because of my age.

“We live in a democracy. If they feel they could do a better job representing the people of Cairns,

Cape York and Torres Strait then I look forward to seeing their names on the ballot paper.

“I also know there are people out there, including within my own party, that didn’t agree with my advocacy for marriage equality.

“I am extremely proud of the role I played in achieving equality for thousands of Australians.

“But at the end of the day they conveniently like to ignore the fact the overwhelming majority of Australians supported change, including 64.4 per cent of people living in Leichhardt.

“If I am fortunate enough to be pre-selected by the local members, I know the next election will be tough.

“The Australian Labor Party and associated unions will use every trick in the book and run the mother of all scare campaign to get Bill Shorten elected.

“However, I have always run a respectful and honest campaign and that will not change.”
