Man charged for stealing a brand new car and possessing counterfeit money

A Cairns man is facing a string of charges after allegedly stealing a brand new Audi from a car dealership.

It is alleged the 40-year-old pinched the car from Bungalow before dumping it on Newell Street soon after due to a security feature limiting its speed.

Police arrested him at a Smithfield shopping centre this morning over a number of offences allegedly committed in the last three months.

He is accused of crimes in Atherton, Bungalow, Smithfield and Cairns.

Officers say they searched the man's car after the arrest and found a quantity of counterfeit money including $100 and $50 notes.

He has been charged with possessing counterfeit money, making money, possessing instructions for producing dangerous drugs, unlicensed driving and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The 40-year-old is due to face the Cairns Magistrates Court today.
