Warning for boaties as whale migration season approaches

A reminder for boaties to stay 100 metres away from humpbacks, if you're lucky enough to spot one off the Far North coast!

Whales have begun their journey north with more than 25,000 expected to make the trek to warmer waters this winter.

Ranger Steve Hoseck says if you see a whale, you need to slow down, keep your distance and stick to the rules.

"100 meters for boats and 300 meters for personal watercraft or jet skis," Mr Hoseck says.

"If there are three other boats in that 100m limit then all other boats must stay 300m away so we don't overcrowd these whales."

He also says not only is it to protect the whales but also to keep us safe.

"These animals can weigh upwards of 40 tonnes and if they happen to breach and land on your boat it could be pretty serious."
