A woman has been viciously attacked in her Cairns home after calling police to report a crime.

The 63-year-old woman was trying to break up a fight between two men on Chester Court early yesterday evening, when she went into her home to call police.

Police say she was savagely beaten by one of the men, a 53-year-old, who followed her into the home.

The 53-year-old Manunda man is accused of punching the woman in the face knocking her to the ground whilst continuing to punch her.

Acting Detective Inspector Kevin Goan says the woman sustained horrific facial injuries.

He also says the man was out for retribution after the woman called police over a disturbance she heard in her street.

"He's been charged with one count of serious assault and one count of entering a premises, stealing and damaging a phone," Acting Detective Inspector Goan says.

The man was expected to front the Cairns Magistrates court today.
