Woman hurt in Cairns carnival ride fall

A young woman has plummeted 15 metres from a carnival ride in Cairns, in a confronting accident on Saturday night.

The woman was in a critical but stable condition on Sunday, after being taken unconscious from the Cairns Showgrounds by emergency services.

Critical Care Paramedic Denis O'Sullivan says onlookers were understandably frantic which made it difficult to reach and treat the woman.

Witnesses say the woman fell from the Hangover ride at the Showfest and lay unmoving below the ride for some time.

Horrified onlookers had to wait for ariound a minute before they could even begin to provide aid as they waited for the attraction to come to a halt.

Police and Workplace Health and Safety are investigating.
