Assault charges, Cairns City
A man has been charged following investigations into the alleged assault of a man in his 70’s on Shields Street on October 15.
It will be alleged around 5.30am the 39-year-old man picked up and threw a council rubbish bin next to where the elderly man was sitting. When the victim told the man to pick up the bin, he allegedly slammed him into the garbage bin before fleeing the area.
The victim was shaken and received treatment for cuts to his hands and elbows.
At around 5.20am, the 39-year-old allegedly kicked a phone box causing the glass to smash at the intersection of Shields and Spence Streets. He then allegedly approached a nearby parked car and jumped on the bonnet causing panel damage.
Following investigations police arrested and charged the 39-year-old Portsmith man yesterday with assault of a person over 60 and two counts of wilful damage.
He is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court today.
