Don 'Jack' Thomson remembers the Battle of Long Tan
This morning in the Breakfast Show I spoke with Cairns local 'Jack' Thomson about his memories of the Battle of Long Tan. Stationed beside Major Harry Smith, Jack was one of the lucky ones. But the varying interpretations of what actually happened on 18 August 1966 still causes pain for him.
In the photo above is Major Harry Smith (circled in red on left), and Don 'Jack" Thomson (circled in red on right). This photo was taken the morning after the Battle of Long Tan when the surviving soldiers returned to locate the bodies of their killed mates, and do a body count of both the Viet Cong and Australians. But what did they actually find? Listen to what Jack had to say below. Stay listening for more double 'in season' passes to see Danger Close: The Battle of Long Tan. And you have an opportunity to meet Jack Thomson at the Special Q&A Morning Tea and Screening this Wednesday morning at Event Cinemas Cairns Central from 10:00 am - just check their website to book your ticket. The movie releases in Cinemas this Thursday.
