Girls’ House to kick-start master plan
Councillors have put their support behind the construction of a Cape York AFL House for Girls as part of a major sport and recreation project at Redlynch.
The facility, which will provide education, wellbeing and career-based programs for indigenous girls, is part of the proposed Redlynch Sport and Recreation Parklands Master Plan.
The Sport and Community Services Committee today endorsed the master plan, which is to be implemented over 10 years.
Council purchased the 51 hectare parcel of land last year to address an under-supply of open public space in the Redlynch area.
The master plan includes provisions for a range of sports with both rectangular and oval playing fields, plus indoor courts, meeting rooms, pathways for active travel use, car parking and a nature play space.
A key component of the master plan is the protection and revegetation of a critical riparian zone bordering the creek network.
